چکیده

A procedure is described of construction of velocity fields and velocity dispersion of the stellar component in the central regions of galaxies on the basis of data obtained with the integral field spectrograph MPFS. Cross-correlation and Fourier quotients techniques adapted for 2D spectra reduction are used. A detailed discussion is given of the problems of providing for the instrumental profile in measuring the velocity dispersion. Using the existing version of the spectrograph, one can measure radial velocities and the dispersion of velocities to an accuracy of 5–10km/s and 10–15km/s, respectively. As an example the “double-barred” galaxy NGC2950 is considered.

Two-dimensional spectroscopy of double-barred galaxies

We describe the results of our spectroscopy for a sample of barred galaxies whose inner regions exhibit an isophotal twist commonly called a secondary bar. The line-of-sight velocity fields of the ionized gas and stars and the light-of-sight velocity dispersion fields of the stars were constructed from two-dimensional spectroscopy with the 6m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope. We dete...

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations

Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

Origin of E+A galaxies: I. Physical properties of E+A’s formed from galaxy merging and interaction

We investigate the structural, kinematical, and spectrophotometric properties of “E+A” galaxies – those with strong Balmer absorption lines but no significant [OII] emission – using numerical simulations combined with stellar population synthesis codes. We particularly focus on the two-dimensional (2D) distributions of line-ofsight velocity, velocity dispersion, colors, line index in E+A galaxi...

Velocity Dispersion Profiles of Seven Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies

We present stellar velocity dispersion profiles for seven Milky Way dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellite galaxies. We have measured 8394 line-of-sight velocities (±2.5 km s) for 6804 stars from highresolution spectra obtained at the Magellan and MMT telescopes. We combine these new data with previously published velocities to obtain the largest available kinematic samples, which include more than ...

The Michigan/mike Fiber System Survey of Stellar Radial Velocities in Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies: Acquisition and Reduction of Data

We introduce a stellar velocity survey of dwarf spheroidal galaxies, undertaken using the Michigan/MIKE Fiber System (MMFS) at the Magellan/Clay 6.5 m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. As of 2006 November we have used MMFS to collect 6415 high-resolution (R = 20000− 25000) spectra from 5180 stars in four dwarf spheroidal galaxies: Carina, Fornax, Sculptor and Sextans. Spectra sample the ra...
